The Joys of Christmas, Part Two: Winter Wonderland

At this time of year, I like to grab my camera and just go for a walk in the frosty winter wonderland. I especially love how the fluffy flakes stick to the prickly needles, and the crisp air makes every breath noticeable. It's such a gorgeous time of year!

The Joys of Christmas, Part One: Christmas Baking!

December is here and Christmas fast approaching. At this beautiful time of the year we get so busy and sometimes think, "well, we could skip the holiday baking", but it's important not to because it's one of my favourite parts of the holidays, and not just because of the tasty sweets! It's fun to spend time with friends and family making cookies, while listening to Boney M!

This year my mom came over and we spent the whole weekend baking! It was a long haul, with emergency "jump-in-the-car-get-coconut-and-butterscotch- visits to the local store and troubles with the 'Gramma Cookie' dough being too sticky. But, this just added to the excitement, and a few bottles of wine later my mom and I had much to show(minus the tarts Wes kept stealing)!

Old Fashioned Entertainment

Call me lame. Call me a sixty-year-old living in a young adult's body, but I think it's just wonderful to watch the birds play outside our living room window. A few weeks after we moved into our home I noticed we had some Blue Jays visiting once in a while. Not long after, I purchased a hanging bird feeder. Since then, it has been a joy to watch the cute little birds come and feed in the mornings while I drink my java. But, I have yet to get some shots of the beautiful Blue Jays!

Meet Baby Ethan

"Every new born baby is God’s opinion that the world should go on."

"A newborn baby is a cheque made payable to the human race."

Meet my adorable, handsome nephew Ethan Feilberg. At ten months, he is so precious and I am so proud of my brother and his wife as wonderful new parents. I figured I just had to put pictures of Ethan up on the blog, because babies are the most beautiful pieces of nature's puzzle. They melt your soul with their big bright eyes and soft giggles.

The Christmas Tree Hunt

"Feelings change, memories don't."

Joel Alexander

Now that the snow is here (and I think to stay), it's finally become reality that Christmas is just over a month away! I've started listening to Christmas tunes, crafting Christmas cards, and will soon begin baking Christmas cookies. But, one of my favourite memories of Christmas with my family is finding the perfect Christmas tree and spending time together decorating its branches.

Unfortunately, I have to wait for a bit yet because we are going to find ourselves a real tree, like we always do, and they don't last that long in the house once they are brought in. But, the SMELL is worth the wait! There's nothing like the smell of a pine or spruce in your house during the holidays.

So, since I have to wait a few weeks until our Christmas tree hunt, I figured I'd put up some pictures I took before the snow fell of some beautiful spruce needles.

Our Shadow

I couldn't resist but to dedicate this blog post to our new little fur-friend, Shadow. She is just so precious, I had to put some pictures of her up on the blog. She is the cuddliest kitten I have ever seen and loves attention! Her name is Shadow, but we often call her Shady Lady!

Tempting and Tasty Greens

Last week I was fortunate enough to be invited to the Moon Gate Bed & Breakfast for a casual cooking class led by my friend Shannon Stebelko.
It was a fun evening out for a bunch of ladies in the community, and the best part about it? Shannon taught us how to make several delicious salads. They were delicious to say the least.

So, why am I blogging about salads? First, it was a great opportunity for me to try my hand at shooting pictures of food, which I realized is not easy. And second, I believe this totally ties in with the theme of my blog, nature.

"Food is our common ground, a universal experience." (James Beard)

And I had to add another quote for Shannon and the ladies that participated in the salad making because there were some roasted garlic lovers!

"Tomatoes and oregano make it Italian; wine and tarragon make it French. Sour cream makes it Russian; lemon and cinnamon make it Greek. Soy sauce makes it Chinese; Garlic makes it GOOD."
(Alice May Brock)

Here are some pictures I took of the wonderful food that night, enjoy! Mmmm was it ever tasty!

After a Refreshing Rain

A few months ago, I finally caved and spoiled myself with a new Canon camera. I have always been interested in photography and more specifically, shooting nature and wildlife.

This blog will capture my journey learning how to shoot the simple but stunning scenes that are all around us. My hope is that you are inspired by these photos and share them with your friends.

I also want to encourage discussions about photography and the unique photographers we are fortunate Canada fosters.

Alright, let's begin! Here are three photos I took the other day after a refreshing fall rain. It was the gloomiest and most miserable day, but in the evening the rain stopped and the lighting was beautiful for photos!
